For country superstar Reba McEntire, Kelly Clarkson's engagement is a family affair. The Stronger singer is not only a close personal friend of McEntire's, but her manager is the country diva's husband Narvel Blackstock, and her new fiance is his son Brandon Blackstock.
So when McEntire speaks out about Clarkson and Blackstock's wedding, she's definitely in the know, considering she's the stepmother of the groom! In fact, McEntire and her husband were one of the first people Kelly, 30, and Brandon, 36, told they were engaged (well, after the former American Idol champion told her 2.5 million followers on Twitter last Saturday).
"We were having our Malibu Country cast Christmas party at our house here in L.A. and Narvel got the call from Brandon during dinner and he said, 'I'll call you right back,'" McEntire told Us Weekly of the momentous occasion. "And then we got upstairs and each got on the phone and got to talk to both of them."
"[Clarkson] said a while back, 'Don't be surprised if we elope!' And I said, 'I will not be surprised!'" she added.
McEntire herself had a small wedding when she married Brandon's father Narvel (her manager) in 1989. It was the second marriage for both of them, and they tied the knot in a private ceremony on a boat in Lake Tahoe.
"That was never my deal and I don't know that that's Kelly's either," she told Us. "I've had two weddings and they were both very small. Very few people. They really weren't even weddings. We had a preacher there, but that's it."
On Wednesday, McEntire and Clarkson took part in the Grammy Awards' "The World Is Listening" (#TWIL) artist interview series on Twitter, and the subject of the wedding was naturally discussed.
McEntire wrote: "@kelly_clarkson And speaking of the engagement, since you are going to be my daughter-in-law, I'm singing at the wedding, right??"
To which Clarkson jokingly responded: "@reba Obviously! My request is "Let's Get It On" by Al Green. That's not awkward, right?"
But McEntire quipped: "@kelly_clarkson We may have to talk about that one later..."
Of course, if they don't elope, chances are Reba will sing at Kelly and Brandon's wedding, because she's not just Kelly's future stepmother-in-law, she's also one of Miss Independent's personal idols.
