Recognizing and Dealing with Domestic Abuse Message Board

Verbal and/or physical abuse touches the lives of many families worldwide, but it often goes undetected. Even when recognized, the process of dealing with domestic abuse in your life or the life of someone you love can be difficult to navigate.

An iVillage community leader referred me to the Recognizing and Dealing with Domestic Abuse board. I was hesitant because I told myself, "I'm not in an abusive relationship, I've never been hit by him" -- not yet, that is. I thought he was having trouble managing his anger because of the stresses of his job. After I found the board, I lurked for a good month-and-a-half, reading other people's stories. I finally got the courage to post my first message. This was two-and-a half years ago. The responses I received were so informative, so helpful, and so supportive. I finally found the courage I needed to leave my abusive spouse. If it wasn't for the existence of this board, I would still probably be with him, living a life of pure hell. I am truly grateful for the existence of this forum.

The Recognizing and Dealing with Domestic Abuse board has been a lifesaver for me. The acceptance, compassion, and concern I found here couldn't be found anywhere else. I'm a different person now than I was six months ago, and that's a good, good thing!
