Record of the Year: "Rolling in the Deep," Adele

Anyone who says they don’t know this cross-over mega-hit has got to be lying, because Adele’s thundering, soulful sound on “Rolling in the Deep” is unavoidable. The lyrics -- set to a booming, bluesy-gospel build-up -- convey a palpable story of scorned love that sends chills up your spine. As her first song in the U.S to reach the top spot on several Billboard charts, "Rolling in the Deep" was recently named the overall best-selling single of 2011 (at over six million copies sold to date). Record of the year is awarded to the song's performer and production team (as opposed to song of the year, which goes only to the songwriter), and in terms of critical quality, universal recognition and pure vocal prowess, fellow nominees Katy Perry (“Firework”), Bruno Mars (“Grenade”), Bon Iver (“Holocene”) and Mumford & Sons (“The Cave”) just can't compare.
