Redmond O'Neal isn't exactly starting off the new year on a positive note. The son of Ryan O'Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett is back in jail, after reportedly violating his probation. The 24-year-old had been undergoing inpatient rehab since September, after doing time in prison for multiple drug arrests.

Per Judge Michael Tynan, O'Neal will spend 30 days in a jail rehab facility pending a Feb. 2 progress report.

"It seems to me you haven't got a clue as to what recovery means," the judge said. "It's a lifetime commitment. It's grinding, hard, painful work."

According to Los Angeles Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore, O'Neal's recovery faltered in late December. "He was out of his rehab facility on a 24-hour pass," Whitmore said. "When he came back, he told his counselors he had used drugs. He subsequently tested positive for drugs"

According to PEOPLE, Redmond O'Neal wrote a letter to the court -- in which he spoke of his family's hardships and how he feels he "let them down" -- in an attempt to explain his relapse.
