When Reese Witherspoon was accosted by an obnoxious drunk at a party, she had no idea she was meeting her future husband. No, Witherspoon's hubby Jim Toth wasn't the intoxicated jerk -- but he was the friend who intervened and pulled the guy away from her.
"This really drunk guy was hitting on me, making such an idiot of himself, yelling at me," Witherspoon recalls in the new issue of Elle. "He was like (slurring), 'You don't know me.' And I was like, 'Yeah, I know. I don't know you!'"
Ah, yes -- we've all been at a party with that guy. Fortunately, Hollywood talent agent Toth noticed his friend making a fool of himself and swooped in.
"Jim came over and said, 'Please excuse my friend. He's just broken up with someone,'" says Witherspoon. "And I remember thinking... that Jim was a really good friend, pulling him out of that situation."
Hmm -- wonder if that guy was invited to the wedding?
Witherspoon, who has two children with first husband Ryan Phillippe, married Toth in March 2011. She admits that he's not the guy she would have pictured for herself in her 20s, but says he makes her happier than anyone else ever has.
"Jim's like, 'I'm gonna show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is,'" she tells Elle. "'I'm going to take care of you. I'm going to do it so much that you're gonna get used to it.' I was like, 'What are you talking about? I've never had anybody like that in my life.'"
Sounds like her first impression was right on the money.
