Relaxation and birth visualization techniques

The following transcript is best read in a soft, but steady voice with special emphasis. If a word is italicized, it should be read with emphasis. Where indicated, the italicized word should convey the feeling of the word, i.e.; "heavy" and should be said in such a way as to suggest heaviness. This helps the pregnant woman absorb the suggestions more deeply. The more you can evoke the sensation of the word, the greater the effectiveness in labor.

Be aware that you will occasionally be reading phrases, rather than whole sentences. Do not be surprised by sequences that are ungrammatical. This is the way that the right hemisphere, the part of the brain, which engages in feeling, takes in suggestions. Whoever is making the recording should read the passages through once before taping. Also be aware that the suggestions travel deeper into your subconscious as they are repeated. Hearing phrases repeatedly in a relaxed state is an excellent technique for reaching the inner mind. Remember that it is the emotional hemisphere of the brain that you are addressing, so keep the flow of your voice consistent and steady. Read it as you would read poetry aloud.

When you are creating your own suggestions be sure that you couch them in metaphors which first state the problem, and then resolve it. An example is a rough, graveled road (which represents a first birth) changing to a smoother, paved road. Use your imagination and enjoy yourself! Begin...

Just as you have adapted and adjusted to the pregnancy, your body continues to adjust and adapt in order to bring your baby out. In fact, you can, ________________, think of labor as a process of adjustment, whereby your cervix adjusts around your baby's head as he or she comes down and your vagina stretches in response to the hormone relaxin which increases in your blood stream near the end of the pregnancy. It will be helpful to give yourself the suggestion that you are just beginning to follow your baby now, through the changes necessary to give birth. Slowly your hormones shift and rearrange in the last month of pregnancy and you can, __________, feel your baby's head heavy, down on your cervix.
