According to The Ocean Project, the idea for a World Oceans Day was first proposed, and even celebrated, back in 1992. Sixteen years later, in 2008, the United Nations finally made it official, and from here on out, the day is celebrated each June 8th. Today!
On this day, we join with zoos, aquariums, conservation-focused nonprofits, and businesses to celebrate the seas. One thing you can do is patronize a restaurant whose chef has been recognized as a pioneer and advocate for local and sustainable foods. The Monterey Bay Aquarium recently honored the chefs below as “ambassadors” worthy of special recognition. Some of them focus on seafood; others specialize in local and sustainable cuisine more broadly.
