It's Retro Rental time! What's Retro Rental, you ask? Well, first of all, let’s be honest -- as busy parents, we often find ourselves half-asleep in a movie theater watching (okay, missing) the newest film release. We’re texting the babysitter while munching on popcorn or preoccupied by well-rested couples on dates. Why do we torture ourselves? A family movie night can be enjoyed by everyone if you turn to the hit movies we all loved as children. No, the Avatar-like effects aren't there, but many have stories that still resonate, whether you were born in the '60s or the '80s or just a few years ago. This week,
This week, I rented Ghostbusters and tried it out on my own little movie fans. When my kids talk about getting slimed, they’re referring to the green goop that’s poured on unsuspecting folks in every Nickelodeon game and award show. When we were kids, getting slimed was the repercussion of running through a ghost. It seemed time to broaden my children’s horizons and introduce them to Slimer, Ghostbusters' green friendly ghost.
As a result, my kids were enthralled by some of the comic geniuses of my generation: Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd. If that wasn’t exiting enough, I found the movie just as silly and fun to watch as I did when I was a kid myself, which is a unique experience in itself. It’s a true family movie. Sure, much of the sexual innuendo was lost on my kids -- thankfully -- but overall the flick translated to the younger generation.
My children were nervous when they heard the consequences of "crossing the streams," in hysterics when the hundred-foot marshmallow man tried to roast the Ghostbusters and found Rick Moranis to be a hilarious, yet desperate man.
I did have to deal with one unexpected side effect though: Hearing my children chirping “Who ya gonna call?” every time the phone rang, but it was totally worth it. This is a retro rental you have to go out and rent!
