It's Retro Rental time! What's Retro Rental, you ask? Well, first of all, let’s be honest -- as busy parents, we often find ourselves half-asleep in a movie theater watching (okay, missing) the newest film release. We’re texting the babysitter while munching on popcorn or preoccupied by well-rested couples on dates. Why do we torture ourselves? A family movie night can be enjoyed by everyone if you turn to the hit movies we all loved as children. No, the Avatar-like effects aren't there, but many have stories that still resonate, whether you were born in the '60s or the '80s or just a few years ago.
This week, I rented The Goonies and tried it out on my own little movie fans. There’s a reason people of my generation see The Goonies as a classic -- it is. No bones about it. I was worried my kids would be scared of the Fratellis crime family or the deformed brother, Sloth. But I was wrong -- everything translated! Sloth and Chunk were a lovable duo, Mouth’s big mouth is as funny now as it was when I was a kid and Data’s gadget-obsessed James Bond persona came across without a hitch. And my kids were absolutely enthralled by the fight scene on One Eyed Willy’s ship. Okay, so it’s no Pirates of the Caribbean, but it certainly deserves a spot in any home theater library. By all means, if you were a Goonies fan when you were growing up, let its Goonie goodness be a pop-culture legacy for your kids.
