It's Retro Rental time! What's Retro Rental, you ask? Well, first of all, let’s be honest -- as busy parents, we often find ourselves half-asleep in a movie theater watching (okay, missing) the newest film release. We’re texting the babysitter while munching on popcorn or preoccupied by well-rested couples on dates. Why do we torture ourselves? A family movie night can be enjoyed by everyone if you turn to the hit movies we all loved as children. No, the Avatar-like effects aren't there, but many have stories that still resonate, whether you were born in the '60s or the '80s or just a few years ago.
This week my family rented the horror/comedy, Gremlins. Well, you’ll find it in the “comedy” section, but if you’re under 9 it’s more of a horror flick. My 5 year old was certainly not ready for those devilish creatures to take over the town’s holiday festivities or get pureed in a blender; she left the room to play with her Bratz dolls before the Gremlins came out of their cocoons. On the other hand, my 8 year old and his friend were glued to the screen. – From the second they saw that precious Mogwai, Gizmo to the evil gremlin, Stripe’s electrifying demise.
Don’t get me wrong, the humor wasn’t lost on the boys. Hearing them crack up at drunk gremlins chain smoking, spinning on ceiling fans, and caroling in the neighborhood was worth the rental fee alone. In the laughs department, the movie theater scene where the Gremlins “Hi-Ho” along with Snow White was a close second to watching Gizmo do his Mario Andretti impression in Barbie’s pink Corvette.
My son who’s been asking to see Jaws - I promise you won’t see that in the Retro Rental column any time soon - was clearly satisfied with this film's scare factor. While covering their eyes and peaking through their fingers, the boys experienced just enough of that adrenaline rush and nervous anxiety to make this movie a hit in the horror genre, “phew.” I’m not ready for anything more advanced.
