Retro Rental- The Karate Kid

It's Retro Rental time! What's Retro Rental, you ask? Well, first of all, let’s be honest -- as busy parents, we often find ourselves half-asleep in a movie theater watching (okay, missing) the newest film release. We’re texting the babysitter while munching on popcorn or preoccupied by well-rested couples on dates. Why do we torture ourselves? A family movie night can be enjoyed by everyone if you turn to the hit movies we all loved as children. No, the Avatar-like effects aren't there, but many have stories that still resonate, whether you were born in the '60s or the '80s or just a few years ago.

This week, I rented The Karate Kid and tried it out on my own little movie fans. Oh, the nostalgia this coming-of-age drama inspires. Plus, who can resist the eternally cute Daniel Larusso (played by Ralph Macchio)? Actually, I can. At least now I can.  What were me and my adolescent friends thinking? I remember being head over heels for him when I was young. We all thought his macho attitude and Newark accent was so sexy.

My kids were not as into the Macchio man as they were the scenes of him training. Yes, wax on wax off is still fun to watch, and my kids were amazed when the “chores” Mr. Miyagi made him do were actually a way for Daniel to aptly defend himself. Of course, the ultimate underdog story ends with a powerful bang. Plus, the one-legged crane kick didn’t disappoint.

The love story was a bit boring for the kids. If only Maccio had the studly side-swept hair of Justin Bieber to their attention during the sappy parts! Luckily, catching a fly with chopsticks is pretty amazing whether you're 7 or 37. This is a rental that lasted the test of time -- the underdog becoming triumphant is a classic.
