In her third blog for the iVillage blog series CelebVillage, actress/filmmaker and mom of two Ricki Lake shares why meeting her "true love," fiance Christian Evans, convinced her to give marriage another try after vowing never to tie the knot again.
Following the end of my first marriage, I was certain that romantic love would not find me again. I have two beautiful children -- Milo, who is 14, and Owen, who is 10 -- who fill my world and family and friends who make my life whole. I have a wonderful career that keeps me surrounded by creative, dedicated people. “I have everything I want,” I would always tell my inner circle. “I will never marry again. Even if I meet Mr. Right, there is no need to make anything ‘official.’”
That was before I met Christian. Fortunately, words don’t have calories -- because I am eating mine! On my 42nd birthday, true love walked into my life, and I am not letting it out.
I spent a number of years dating -- online, set-ups, you name it. I was ready to throw in the towel. Thank goodness I didn’t. The kindest, most caring spirit was just around the corner, and I could have missed the love of a lifetime.
After a year-long relationship, he asked me to marry him -- while we were vacationing in Spain. It felt so right. At 43, I have a renewed sense of excitement about everything I do. Most important, he loves my kids and my kids love him. There is nothing better than seeing all of my guys together.
Interestingly, no one in my life reminded me that I vowed never to tie the knot a second time -- and it didn’t dawn on me, either. I think that says everything!
