Ricky Martin is finally confirming what many people had long suspected: that he’s gay. "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man," Martin, 38, revealed Monday on RickyMartinMusic.com. "I am very blessed to be who I am."
The singer, who had avoided questions about his orientation for years, credited his twin sons Matteo and Valentino -- who’ll be 2 in August and were born via surrogate -- with giving him the courage to go public with the news. "To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids were born with," Martin writes.
Starting to pen his memoirs a few months ago got Martin “closer to an amazing turning point in my life,” he writes. And the serenity of his personal life brought him to the place where he felt he could no longer hold back his truth.
“These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed,” he adds. “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”
