Love makes people do crazy things. Case in point: on Wednesday, Rihanna accompanied boyfriend Chris Brown to a court hearing, where he was accused of blowing off his community service hours for his 2009 assault charge. And who did Brown plead guilty to assaulting in 2009? That's right: Rihanna. It's the circle of a really messed-up life!
According to reports, the "Diamonds" singer blew Brown a kiss and "said some supportive words" as they entered the courtroom. While Rihanna and Brown's mother looked on from the gallery, prosecutors made the case that Chris lied about performing his community service hours, possibly even scheming with the police department of Richmond, Va., to create bogus records. The Los Angeles District Attorney claims that in one case, Brown said he was picking up trash in Virginia when he was actually on a private jet to Cancun.
There's also the issue of probation violations, of which Brown may have plenty -- including his recent (allleged) assault of Frank Ocean, that drug test he failed in the fall and that time he threw a chair through the window of the Good Morning America studio.
But let's return to the elephant -- or in this case, the Barbadian pop singer -- in the courtroom. By coming along, Rihanna was lending her support to Brown, while he argued that he shouldn't receive any further punishment for putting her in the hospital. Seriously, whose idea was this? Did Chris trick her into coming by saying they were going to McDonald's? Or does she actually think Brown should be let off the hook for the very serious crime he committed against her?
"[Rihanna is] completely supportive," Brown's lawyer told CNN. "She thinks it's utterly ridiculous to him."
Even if that's true, there is no way Brown should have allowed Rihanna to come anywhere near that courtroom, out of respect to her. First of all, did it not occur to him that listening to people discuss her assault might be kind of traumatic? Moreover, by bringing her to court, Brown is essentially using Rihanna as a prop to make himself look less guilty. Talk about having no class.
To top it all off, word on the street is that Chris and Rihanna may come to Sunday's Grammys together, marking the first time they have walked the red carpet as a couple since the assault (which took place en route to the awards show in 2009). We're sure they'll look gorgeous together. And it won't make the whole thing any less troubling.
