R&B singer Rihanna might seem as if she has it all: looks, talent, a great fashion sense, but the 22-year-old says her year-long relationship with singer Chris Brown, which ended in domestic violence, had her acting like a different person.
In the December issue of Marie Claire UK she talks about the person she is now. "I remember I was in New York at the Trump Hotel and I woke up and I just knew it was over. It was a different day. I felt different. I didn’t feel lonely. I felt like I wanted to get up and be in the world. That was a great, great feeling."
What wasn’t great was what her relationship with the 21-year-old did to her emotionally. "All this terrible stuff they say to you, it breaks you down. But once you’re back on your feet – if you ever make it back on your feet – that’s the ultimate achievement."
Back then Rihanna couldn’t help but wonder, "What did I do to deserve this? But I needed that wake-up call in my life. I needed a turning point, and that’s what God was giving to me." Brown pled guilty to the felony assault in June of last year and was sentenced to five years probation.
Rihanna on the other hand has been keeping herself busy in the studio. Her collaboration over the summer with rapper Eminem on the single "Love the Way You Lie" quickly reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. She hopes to continue that success with her fifth studio album, Loud, which is set for release on November 16.
And you know that Madame Tussauds wax figure that was unveiled of the singer back in August? Well it might not be smiling, but the real Rihanna is. "I feel like I smile for real this time. The smiles come from inside, and it exudes in everything I do. People feel my energy is different. When I smile they can tell it’s pure bliss and not just a cover up."
