Rihanna: It's Not Fun to Be a Role Model

The singer says she's torn between setting the right example for her young fans and being her "sassy" self

Rihanna is trying very hard to keep her life balanced. But the 23-year-old pop star has a lot on her plate, as she's torn between setting a good example for her young fans and coming into her own as a woman.

"I want to set the right example and, at the same time, live my life," the "California King Bed" singer says in the new issue of Glamour. "I feel like pop stars can't be rock stars anymore because they have to be role models, and it takes the fun out of it for us, because we just want to have fun with art."

Rihanna says that when she first hit the music scene, she had to abide by certain restrictions of her record company, as to not send the wrong message to young girls.

"In the beginning of my career, it was really strict for me. I couldn't wear pink or red lipstick. It was just bizarre," she explains. "We had a young fan base, and they were trying to keep me fresh. But I really just wanted to be myself. I wanted to be sassy, the attitude, all the things that I am."

Now that she's established herself as a strong, independent woman, Rihanna feels she's free to express herself. And she does so with her music, as well as her fashion sense (both which can be very risque sometimes!).

"Getting dressed, I want to pick the most bizarre pair of shorts so I can figure out how to make it look right, or work an outfit that will make people go, 'What the hell is she wearing?'" she says.

And though her life seems glamorous now, Rihanna has certainly had her share of ups and downs -- but she seems okay with that.

"I hate drama, at the same time, nothing bothers me more than when life's perfect," she says. "And that's the sick part. I just love a challenge. Whether it's a relationship, my career, or my clothing."

But isn't that what makes her so fascinating?
