The Risk: Heart and Cardiovascular Disease

This is the number one complication of diabetes, affecting everyone who is diagnosed to some degree or another. In fact, middle-age people who have type 2 are considered to be at as great a risk for a heart attack as someone without diabetes who has already had one. However, the 10-year Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study showed that intensive blood glucose control reduces the risk of any cardiovascular disease event by 42 percent and nonfatal heart attack, stroke or death from cardiovascular causes by 57 percent.
