The Risk: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Many teenagers have sex at young ages, exposing themselves to STDs like gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV (the AIDS virus), herpes and genital warts. In 2009, 46 percent of high school students said they had had intercourse. Although STDs are a risk to all—people between 15 and 24 acquire nearly half of all STDs—they are most prevalent in blacks, followed by Hispanics, then whites.
