Judging from Robert Pattinson's offscreen "friendship" with Kristen Stewart (4 years his junior), he's into younger women. But is he prepared to make an exception for Nicole Kidman?
Rumors are going strong that 23-year-old Pattinson and 42-year-old Kidman have been cast as lovers in the upcoming film Bel Ami. The movie is a 19th-century period piece about a journalist who manipulates his way to the top of high society by sleeping with powerful men's wives.
This kind of role would be quite a change for Pattinson, who's spent the past few years brooding in Twilight films. Kidman, on the other hand, is right at home with seductress roles. She's even done her share of onscreen cradle-robbing. In a breakout performance in 1995's To Die For, Kidman played a fame-craving teacher who seduces a student (a young Joaquin Phoenix) and convinces him to kill her husband. (The role was based on the real-life case of Pamela Smart.) Then in 1994, Kidman took things one step creepier with Birth, in which she's convinced that a ten-year-old boy is the reincarnation of her dead husband. That movie garnered controversy for a scene where Kidman takes a bath with child actor Cameron Bright (even though the two actors shot the scene separately and weren't actually naked together).
A Pattinson-Kidman romance certainly sounds more appealing than those two examples. On the other hand, there are some doubts about the unlikely twosome taking the screen together. While the casting has been widely reported, Screencrave says that Pattinson isn't fully committed, and Gossip Cop claims that Kidman has a scheduling conflict. If Bel Ami is off, you can still watch Nicole do her seductress thing and Pattinson do his charismatic thing in this November's Nine and The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
