A while back,I blogged about British pop singer Mika and his catchy little – and yet, quite big – ditty, Big Girls, You Are Beautiful. (Go listen, but don’t hold me responsible if you can’t get it out of your mind for 48 hours.)
Diet coke and a pizza please
Diet coke I'm on my knees
Screaming 'Big girl you are beautiful'
You take your skinny girl
Feel like I'm gonna die
'Cause a real woman
Needs a real man here's why
You take your girl
And multiply her by four
Now a whole lotta woman
Needs a whole lot more
Now, a new group is singing out in praise of change, in an effort to change the shape of pop: The Glamazons. The Glamazons are a plus-size singing ensemble whose mission is to show the world that talent comes in all sizes. The fierce foursome consists of Lady Finger (Meryl Finger), Candy Apple (Sandra May), Caramella (Laura Johnson) and Ginger Snapp (Sarah Orr). These ladies gained a ton of fans in 2007 when they were on NBC's America's Got Talent, where they made it to the Final Eight, and were featured in Torrid's Spring 2008 advertising campaign.
The Glamazons have launched a fan-based fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $90,000 to cover the costs of making and promoting the album. Says Gingersnap: "We don't fit the record-industry mold and we don't want to. By funding our album through donations, we're giving real people the power to decide who they think should be pop stars. This is a way for our supporters to say that beauty and talent comes in every shape and size." You can pitch in $5 and up at their website; a donation of $15,000 will net you a NY or LA shopping spree with The Glamazons. (FYI Not to detract from their mission or anything, but if you buy me a frozen yogurt, I’ll go shopping with you FOR FREE!)
PS Watch The Glamazons join forces with Mika in concert here – love the giant blow-up woman who is erected at 2:10!
