Appearing on a Law & Order episode is practically a right of passage for film and TV actors. That's how it happened for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo's Rooney Mara, who got one of her first acting jobs on a 2006 episode of Special Victim's Unit. But while the exposure certainly didn't hurt her career, Mara, 26, found her whole storyline cringe-worthy.
"It was so awful," she vents in the new issue of Allure. "People are obsessed with that show. I don't get it."
Mara explains her episode thusly: "Me and my boyfriend -- although I (didn't) look old enough to have a boyfriend -- went and beat up these fat people, and at the end of the show you find out that I used to be obese and I hate fat people. It's ridiculous. Who would ever do that? Who would beat someone up because they're fat?"
That's a pretty big leap of logic all right. But the episode's story gets even worse -- and turns out to be a foreshadowing of the violence that her Dragon Tattoo character, Lisbeth Salander, suffers at the hands of her enemies.
"As retribution, they sodomized (my SVU character)," says Mara. "I mean, I've been sodomized since the beginning of my career. I should have known then it would come full circle."
That's a pretty dark joke -- but then, The Girl With the Drago Tattoo promises to be a pretty dark movie.
