Rosie O'Donnell is blissfully happy with fiancee Michelle Rounds, and she thinks her past failed relationships are partially to thank for her current happiness.
"I was properly in love I'd say three times," O'Donnell tells Piers Morgan on his CNN show Tuesday night.
The talk-show host, who turns 50 in March, explains how her first serious relationship with a woman (whom she doesn't name) was devastating but also necessary.
"You have one relationship in your life that's kind of crazy and out of control a little bit and that usually doesn't last very long but takes you into the deep water," she says.
Although she can recall the breakup and heartache "vividly," O'Donnell believes that first love taught her some valuable lessons about herself: "I realized I was capable of risk taking."
O'Donnell also reveals that despite being an out-and-proud lesbian, she did have a live-in relationship with a man.
"His name's Mike and I lived with him for about two years," she says, recalling that there was something freeing about being in a heterosexual partnership -- even though deep down she knew she was gay.
"There was something really glorious about being in a relationship at the supermarket with your partner, getting stuff for the football game on Sunday and having the cashier say, 'How long have you guys been dating?'" she says. "When you're there with a woman, with your same sex partner, no one asks."
No one needs to ask O'Donnell if she's with someone now, because she and Rounds are very affectionate. And the comedian adds that the level of support she's received since making her romance public has been "astounding.
