Russell Brand: "I Was Really Into the Idea" of Kids with Katy Perry

The British comedian opens up about his failed marriage: "I was really, really in love with her"

Russell Brand resisted shock jock Howard Stern's prodding to say anything controversial about his short-lived marriage to Katy Perry.

During the British comedian's first interview since his divorce was finalized,  Brand, 37, was quite gracious on the subject of his ex-wife, 27. "She's a good person, I've got nothing but love for her," he told Stern's Sirius/XM radio show on Wednesday.

But Brand did give a summary of why their 14-month marriage became difficult for him to sustain.

"I loved her so much, it just seemed like the sensible thing to do [when we got married] ... I just loved her so much," he explained of their wedding on Oct. 23, 2010 in India.

By December 2011, however, Brand realized, "This isn't really working out, it's a difficult situation ... I was really, really in love with her, but it was difficult to see each other ... We were together when it was right to be together, and when it wasn't we worked it out ... It was a lovely relationship ... it mostly didn't work for practical reasons."

Then he explains that it was all for the best: "We did work it out; she's happy, I'm happy."

The Rock of Ages star explains that the "practical reasons" included the amount of time the two were apart due to her tour schedule -- an issue that is explored in Perry's documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me.

"She's young, successful and dedicated," Brand explained of Perry's career. "[The reality is] you can't fully understand it until you do it. I was really into the idea of marriage and having children."

After remaining kind to Perry, Brand did admit that he is dating Isabella Brewster, the younger sister of The Fast and the Furious star Jordana Brewster.

"Some things in the newspaper aren't true ... that's true, actually," he said, confirming the relationship.
