Russell Crowe isn't the kind of guy who normally wears tights. So it makes sense that his Robin Hood will be unlike any we've seen before. New photos of Crowe as Robin have just come out -- and there's no green cape or pointy hat in sight.
The new Robin Hood movie, also starring Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, is being directed by Ridley Scott. Scott directed Crowe in his Oscar-winning Gladiator performance, and this film promises to be similarly gritty. They're even making Robin Hood into a soldier: according to screenwriter Brian Helgeland (who also wrote Crowe's L.A. Confidential), Robin Hood will now be an archer in the Crusades. Gone is the merry tree-dweller that Errol Flynn played in 1938. Says Helgeland, "I don't think a single person swings on a rope in this movie."
The last attempt at making Robin Hood "real" was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner. In an on-set interview with The Today Show, Crowe made fun of the 1991 film: "When you look back at Prince of Thieves, it's like watching an extended Jon Bon Jovi video clip."
This movie, Crowe promises, will be grittier and more violent: "You've got 130 horses doing a full-speed gallop charge into 600 guys on the ground. And every man on the horse is going to do a half-dozen fight pieces."
So: no Bryan Adams theme song, then?
