Ryan Gosling: 'Notebook' Director Told Me I Wasn't "Handsome" or "Cool"

Nick Cassavetes told the hunky star that he hired him because he was a "regular guy who looks a bit nuts"

By now, we figured that Ryan Gosling's hotness was a basic fact of the universe, like gravity. But it turns out that Gosling got his big break in The Notebook because the director wanted someone who wasn't hot! In an interview with the British magazine Company (via New York Daily News), Gosling reveals the surprising way he scored the lead role in the 2004 romantic drama.

"The director, Nick Cassavetes, called me to meet him at his house," recalls Gosling, 31. "When I got there, he was standing in his back yard, and he looked at me and said, 'I want you to play this role because you're not like the other young actors out there in Hollywood. You're not handsome, you're not cool, you're just a regular guy who looks a bit nuts.'"

How's that for a pep talk? Furthermore: What planet does Nick Cassavetes live on where Ryan Gosling is not handsome or cool? But Gosling has said in the past that he shares the director's assessment. In an October interview, he called himself "weird-looking," and pointed out that "every role I got until The Notebook was the weirdo, freak, psychopath, nerd, outside character guy."

While Gosling has surely come to realize he's not that bad-looking (the women fainting left and right are probably a tip-off), he still seems to think of himself as an outsider. That probably goes back to his childhood, which he describes to Company as "lonely." In fact, that's part of the reason he got into show business.

"I didn't do well at school and TV was my only friend," Gosling admits. "Then one day, I saw Raquel Welch on The Muppet Show. She was dancing with this big furry spider and I immediately fell in love. She was the first crush I ever had, and I thought, 'How do I get to meet this woman?' And then I thought, 'Well, she's on TV, so to meet her I have to get on TV myself."

Maybe that plan proves that Gosling is a bit nuts, as Cassavetes said. Still -- the fact that he actually got himself on TV, and now dates movie stars like Eva Mendes, proves beyond reasonable doubt that Gosling is very cool. And as for his handsomeness? We direct your attention to Exhibit A, the photo above this post. Exhibit B: this gallery of more hot photos of Ryan Gosling. The defense rests!
