Ryan Gosling was robbed! That's what thousands of moviegoers are saying now that Bradley Cooper has been declared People's Sexiest Man Alive for 2011. Gosling, who had a banner year with three very different films (the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love., the violent thriller Drive and the political drama The Ides of March), is featured in a small inset on Cooper's People magazine cover -- but that's just not good enough for his many loyal female fans. Or George Clooney, for that matter.
That's right -- two-time Sexiest Man Alive Clooney, 50, was an advocate for Gosling, 31, to win this year's title. At the premiere of his new movie The Decendants on Tuesday (the night before the Sexiest Man title was unveiled), Clooney joked to Extra that he was trying to help his Ides of March costar nab the honor.
"It's got to be Ryan, don't you think? He's been training and working so hard for it, Ryan Gosling has. He really wants it," the famous prankster said. "The whole time we were on the set of Ides, he was like, 'How did you pull that off?' So I called up Brad Pitt and we worked with him for weeks on the walk... we told him how to train... everything."
Even though Cooper has already been declared the winner, Gosling's supporters aren't giving up so easily. An online petition titled "People Magazine: Admit Ryan Gosling should have been named Sexiest Man Alive 2011" has acquired more than 2,000 signatures. A Buzzfeed post called 63 Reasons Why Bradley Cooper Definitely Isn't the Sexiest Man Alive -- consisting of 63 recent photos of Gosling -- has 7,100 "likes" on Facebook.
Most impressive of all, impassioned fans (with a sense of humor) held an anti-Bradley Cooper protest on Wednesday afternoon, during which they wore masks of Ryan Gosling's face and held up signs on the sidewalk outside People's office. They even had a chant: "One, two, three, four/ Bradley Cooper is a bore/ Five, six, seven eight/Ryan Gosling's super great!"
Even if People is unlikely to be moved to change, seeing those protestors out in the rain -- just like that scene from The Notebook! -- has touched our hearts. Bradley Cooper may be the Sexiest Man Alive, but the affection of Ryan Gosling's fans is the greatest love of all.
