Everyone Wants Ryan Gosling to be Batman Except Ryan Gosling

Once again, the Internet thinks everything would be better if the actor got involved

Ever since Christian Bale donned a cape in The Dark Knight, people who never cared about superheroes have been obsessed with Batman. He has a tortured mind and a beautiful soul! He's the Edward Cullen of comic book movies! Alas, Christian Bale has retired from the role, taking his sexy voice and chiseled body with him. Who could possibly follow in his footsteps? If you're thinking Ryan Gosling, then join the club.

Following this weekend's Comic-Con announcement that a Batman-and-Superman movie is in the works, speculation about the next Batman has reached a fever pitch -- and it's no surprise that Gosling is the Internet's top candidate. The Internet loves Ryan Gosling with a deep, abiding love, and we are no exception.

All things considered, Gosling would be a terrific Batman. He can be silent, mysterious and threatening one minute (see: Drive), and vulnerable and passionate the next (see: The Notebook). He has the physique (see: Crazy Stupid Love) and the requisite tortured soul (see: Blue Valentine). He could take the role of Batman to deeper, darker, more mesmerizing places than even Bale did.

It's a pity, then, that this will never happen. Why not, you ask? Here are just a few of the reasons. First and foremost, Gosling is "taking a break" from acting right now, and this movie is definitely rushing into production before Henry Cavill loses muscle tone. Second, Gosling has made it abundantly clear that he's not interested in making blockbusters. He's had tons of chances to take the money and run, but consistently gravitates toward character-driven indie films instead of special effects monstrosities. Third, his friend George Clooney (of the infamous Batman & Robin) has probably warned him away from playing the Caped Crusader.

Really, it's okay, because there are some other excellent Batman candidates. A Guardian poll has Joseph Gordon Levitt running a close second for fans' choice. He's an amazing actor who could use a mainstream breakout role like this one. Michael Fassbender, also on the poll, could be great. Jake Gyllenhaal is another name that keeps coming up, to which we say... maybe?

Maybe one of these actors will be dubbed the new Dark Knight. Or maybe Gosling will surprise us all and decide to throw his hat in the ring. It's the last thing we'd expect from him -- and that alone could make it worth his while.
