While Ryan Phillippe is showing off his rock-hard abs on the cover of the new issue of Men's Health, he's also giving us a glimpse of his soft and sensitive heart.
"I still have sadness and complicated feelings about my divorce," Phillippe, 35, tells the magazine of his 2006 split from Reese Witherspoon. The couple had been married for almost seven years and their union produced two children, Ava, 10, and Deacon, 6.
Years later, the dad says he continues his quest to move forward emotionally. "How beneficial is it to keep hanging onto those feelings? If someone lives through an accident, his aim is to become better and healthy."
The actor, who's battled rumors that he cheated on Witherspoon with now-ex-girlfriend Abbie Cornish, says as hard as he works on his bod (did you get a look at that six-pack?), he's putting just as much effort on training the person inside.
"My aim is always to progress," Phillippe reveals. "To make better decisions and be a better father, a better boyfriend, a better husband if it happens again."
The MacGruber star also says that keeping healthy and fit sets a good example for his kids -- and that they are old enough appreciate what it's like to have a dad who can whip up a nutritious meal for them.
"There's something about the kids knowing the parent is making the food for them with love," he says. "My kids think I'm an amazing cook, and that's all that matters."
"I like feeling strong...I want to throw my kids up in the air and wrestle them," he adds. "Working out has become about functionality."
