Safety Around the House

Insuring Safe Sleep

  • Put your baby on his back to sleep, which reduces the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, also known as crib death).
  • Don't place the crib near a radiator or heater.
  • Loop up cords from window blinds so they're not in your baby's reach.
  • Be sure your crib paint is nontoxic and lead free.
  • Make sure crib slats are no more than 2 3/8 inches apart, head and foot boards are free of cutouts and corner posts are no more than1/16 of an inch.
  • Be sure the mattress fits snugly - it's too small if you can get two fingers between it and the sides of the crib.
  • Avoid pillows, comforters and soft bedding - your baby can suffocate.
  • Keep toys out of the crib.
  • Use breathable blankets.
  • Remove crib gyms and mobiles when your child can push up.
  • Lower the mattress to the bottom position when your child can stand.
