No one likes the idea of rubbing salt in a wound, but some kids are taking the idiom literally. The salt and ice challenge involves wetting the skin, pouring table salt on top and then pushing down on it with an ice cube until the participant can no longer take the pain. Thing is, it can seriously burn the skin. A Pittsburgh boy, 12, received second-degree cold injuries on his back after trying out the stunt he and his twin brother had seen on YouTube and Facebook, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "The injury is similar to frostbite that can result in mild cold injury but it also could increase in severity based on the time the ice is applied," Dr. Ariel Aballay, director of the West Penn Burn Center, tells the newspaper. "The longer, the more serious the injury. This patient went for a few minutes, but there have been cases that went for six or seven minutes that resulted in third-degree injuries.”
