Sunday night at the MTV Movie Awards, Sandra Bullock made her first televised appearance since the very public dissolution of her marriage to Jesse James -- but she surprised us all by showing up first at the Spike TV Guys Choice Awards on Saturday. Looking downright fabulous in a black leather dress (was she spending all that time in hiding doing Tae Bo?), Bullock accepted the "Troops Choice" Award for Entertainer of the Year -- which was voted on by members of the American military.
Surrounded by decorated soldiers, a very charming Bullock managed to address the scandal while still appearing strong, humble and grateful. "So, um, let's be honest here just for a moment," she began. "Did I win this for being Entertainer of the Year, or did I win this because of the spectacular IED explosion that became my personal life?" After the crowd laughed nervously, Bullock continued, "No, it's okay, it's okay -- because I would do it over and over and over again if it was to entertain our troops." Brilliant! Could somebody please introduce Obama to Sandra Bullock's speechwriter? The actress then jokingly apologized for not being more entertaining ("I would sing, but you've seen enough pain in your lifetime") before launching into a heartfelt thank-you to America's soldiers.
Bullock has our deep admiration for being so unflappable, and so funny, in the wake of scandal. But we're even more amazed at her ability to keep us guessing. We all knew she'd be attending the MTV Movie Awards, so none of us thought twice about the Guys Choice Awards. It's nothing compared to that whole "Look! I have a baby!" cover story suprise -- but still, we love that Sandra is always one step ahead of us.
