Sansone Makes Me Sore

I have been humbled by Leslie Sansone.

I always believed walking was for couch potatoes, that it couldn’t burn fat off my body, which is used to the kick-butt Stairmaster. But Leslie has become such a phenomenon—she has more than 30 workout DVDs, a legion of followers, and a gazillion TV appearances--that I had to experience her workouts myself. My fave is her latest release, 5 Day Slim Down, which includes a 6-minute warm-up, five different “mile walks” (ranging from 12-14 minutes each), and a 9-minute cooldown.

“Walking” is really marching in place, and if you pump your arms and bring your knees high, you’ll be out of breath in a nanosecond. Two minutes into Leslie’s first mile, my cheeks were flushed and glowing in respect for her.

But you probably already know how great her workouts are.

Here’s why I (and several reviewers on and think Leslie’s 5 Day Slim Down is her best video:

--Each mile is different. The first mile is her trademark walk, the second adds arm movements (grab 1-2lb dumbbells to increase intensity), the third adds leg moves (like squats and lunges), the fourth adds standing abdominal moves, and the fifth is a speed walk (the music is 150-beats per minute).

--You can divide and organize the workouts anyway you wish, sweating anywhere from 27 to 80 minutes.

--Leslie sweats solo in this video, so there’s less perky chatter (perfect for cranky exercisers).

--Instead of her popular black curtain as a backdrop, Leslie’s in a big, open studio…with windows!

As usual for Leslie's workouts, her 5 Day Slim Down is easy to follow with peppy (but not too peppy) dance music, and no equipment is required. Rain or shine, Leslie’s ready for you! Whether you like it or not.
