There seems to be a split opinion on whether the crowd's negative reaction was aimed at DWTS contestant Bristol Palin's mom or whether they were simply displeased with Jennifer Grey's low scores (which were announced moments before Palin was introduced).
"There's booing in the ballroom," Co-host Brooke Burke said during the broadcast. "We don't know why." But the show's executive producer Conrad Green assured E! that Palin was not to blame. "The booing heard was a direct response from the audience to Jennifer Grey and Derek (Hough)'s scores which were perceived as relatively low for a dance that received a standing ovation," he said.
Palin, who sat with her youngest daughter Piper, looked startled by the crowd's reception. But "Bristol the Pistol" was just happy to have her mother's support. "Hopefully she'll be able to make it (again)," she said. "Who knows if it will be next week or whenever, I'm just happy she was able to see one of them."
Watch the video below and decide whether Palin got a chilly reception or the wrong end of fans' disagreement with the judges:
Some outlets were outraged with the possibility of intentional Palin booing (Entertainment Weekly called the incident "irritating," "ugly and enraging behavior"). But others found it pretty funny. Check out the bit from Jimmy Kimmel Live! in which Mrs. Palin has an unfavorable reaction of her own:
