Is 'Saved by the Bell' Star Lark Voorhies Battling Bipolar Disorder?

The former teen star's mother tells People that her daughter is struggling with mental illness

Former Saved By the Bell actress Lark Voorhies has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder -- and the mental illness explains her recent erratic behavior, says her mother.

Voorhies, who shot to fame as Lisa Turtle in the early '90s, gave a series of interviews for the latest issue of People. According to the magazine, she frequently stopped mid-sentence to stare off, mumbled to herself and spoke to others who weren't there during the talks.

"There are things that have traumatized her," mom Tricia Voorhies, 64, tells People. "I care deeply about my daughter and I want her to resume her life."

Tricia, who lives with Lark in Pasadena, Calif., tells People that the 1993 cancellation of Saved By the Bell and Lark's 2001 divorce both damaged Lark's mental health. Her divorce, in particular, "caused a kind of break."

Voorhies, however, denies that she is mentally ill, and claims her mother’s fears are just the product of "over-loving." And even though Lark has fallen from public view, she tells People she's been recording music, self-publishing books and working on low-budget indie productions.

Lark's former Saved By The Bell costar Dustin Diamond, who played comedic geek Screech, described her odd behavior on a recent indie film set. As the shoot progressed, Lark hesitated before saying her lines and disappeared between takes, Diamond tells RadarOnline.

"The person who said 'Hi' to me when she first showed up on-set was not the same person at the end of the night," he says. "It was like talking to two different people."

As for the incoherent moments during her People interview, the actress says her mind was on higher topics.

"I have a strong spiritual sense," she says. "You caught me in moments of pray.”
