Saving: Back to School Savings Ideas

Save on back-to-school clothes and supplies.

Gap and BabyGap do their markdowns on Tuesday nights. So get there when it opens on Wednesday morning to get the best deals! Also, they give you 14 days to get a price adjustment if something gets marked down again after you bought it -- just bring in your receipt. - tiphaniea

Try to spread purchases out over the year. School supplies can be picked up at the warehouse club anytime. On one trip we buy pencils; next time a package of pens, etc. I also got beyond the idea that underwear and socks had to replaced every September. If everyone's things are still decent and wearable, I hold off until later in the school year. A good quality book bag is a better buy in the long run than a cheap one. My kids use theirs for as long as three years. I wash them occasionally in cold water on the delicate cycle. It also works well to have clothes that coordinate to make many different outfits with fewer items. - annemarienyc

It seems obvious, but a lot can be saved each month by packing lunches for the kids rather than shelling out $15 a week or so. Perhaps the money saved can go towards clothes or new sneakers when needed. - pmaruca
