School Bans Transgender First Grader From Using the Girls' Bathroom
Coy Mathis may have been born a boy, but the Colorado first-grader identifies as a girl – and now that her school district officials have declared that the child must stop using the girls' bathrooms at her school, a discrimination complaint has been filed by the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, CNN reports. During a press conference in Denver, Coy's mother, Kathryn Mathis, said her daughter used the female restroom at Eagleside Elementary in kindergarten with no complaints, according to the network, and notes that Coy is being homeschooled, due to the fear of bullying. "In the end we just want what is the best for Coy," she said, regarding the lawsuit, CNN adds. "We want her to be able to go back to school and be treated equally without discrimination and harassment." The defense fund's Michael Silverman told reporters the world will be watching the school, saying it can "send a message to the world and teach tolerance, fair play and equal rights."
