Applebee's Asks Mom to Breastfeed in the Bathroom

Eatin' good in the neighborhood is fine and dandy -- so long as the eatin' doesn't include a child breastfeeding at one Applebee's restaurant. WXIA-TV in Atlanta reports Dawn Holland was dining at a Covington, Ga., Applebee's, breastfeeding her son, 20 months, in a booth, when the chain's manager told her to do her feeding in the bathroom or get out. "It's completely natural," Holland tells the station, adding that she initially refused to do either and the police were called. "It's not like I'm exposing myself to anyone. I don't think I should have to go someplace else to breastfeed." No police report was filed, WXIA notes, and the mom eventually left before eating. Applebee's calls the incident "an unfortunate misunderstanding" in a statement, adding that the company's "top priority is always to provide a friendly and comfortable environment for everyone, including nursing mothers who have the right to nurse in public." Perhaps a chain-wide memo is in order.
