The poster for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World describes the movie as "an epic of epic epicness." Epicness aside, what I wanted to know is whether or not this film was appropriate for children?
Firstly, the movie has a PG-13 rating ,which cautions parents that some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. Now, I've seen PG-13 films that were mild and posed no problems with my 9 and 12-year-old daughters. However, although the foul language in the film is bleeped, the story itself might be a bit too, let's say "advanced" for younger children.
Bryan Lee O'Malley's comic series revolves around 23-year-old slacker and band member Scott Pilgrim, played by Juno's Michael Cera, and his pursuit of love with the new girl in town, Ramona Flowers. So it's a romance, right? Well sort of, but not really, as there's a catch -- in order for Scott to date Ramona he must defeat all seven of her evil ex-boyfriends who each have special powers, control her love life and have every intention of destroying him.
My kids may be a bit too young to understand why a guy in his early 20s would go to the lengths of inflicting and having violence inflicted on him for a girl he's just met. And although they love a great action film, like the Spiderman series or Harry Potter, Scott Pilgrim's storyline isn't yet relatable to them and may be slightly too mature and violent for kids their age. The film was made for a particular audience, fans of the comic books that are a bit older and can connect with the young and reckless rocker Scott Pilgrim.
