George Clooney & Brad Pitt Lead SAG Awards Nominations

The Help and The Descendants have a strong showing in movies, while Breaking Bad and Modern Family lead the way in TV

The 2012 awards season is heating up, as the Screen Actors Guild announced its nominations Wednesday morning. The Help led the charge with four nods recognizing its all-star female cast, but The Descendants, Bridesmaids, Moneyball and The Artist all had good showings as well, building on the big wins they've already snagged from other critics' circles.

The Help was nominated for best ensemble cast, best female performance (Viola Davis) and two best supporting actress performances (Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer). Bridesmaids, The Descendants and The Artist also got dual recognition for their ensembles and specific actors: Bridesmaids' Melissa McCarthy scored a supporting actress nod and The Descendants' George Clooney earned a best actor nom, while The Artist's Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo earned best actor and best supporting actress nominations, respectively. Rounding out the ensemble cast nominations was Midnight in Paris, which received no other nods.

In addition to Clooney and Dujardin, Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar), Brad Pitt (Moneyball) and Demian Bichir (A Better Life) all got nominations for best actor. Of those five, relative unknown Bichir was the big surprise.

The best female actor category contained no such shockers: Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) joined Davis there.

Jonah Hill, meanwhile, was a somewhat  dark-horse addition to the best supporting actor category, receiving his first major awards show nomination. He'll be up against Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn), Nick Nolte (Warrior), Christopher Plummer (Beginners) and Armie Hammer (J. Edgar).

Rounding out the list of best supporting actresses, Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) joins Spencer, McCarthy, Chastain and Bejo.

The usual suspects toplined the list of nominated TV actors and actresses. Breaking Bad, Dexter, Modern Family and 30 Rock all earned ensemble nods for dramatic and comedic television programming, while their stars like Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Tina Fey (30 Rock), and Modern Family's Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen all got recognition as well. It was nice to see Friday Night Lights star Kyle Chandler get a nod for his Emmy-winning role, and Game of Thrones and True Blood earn an ensemble nod.

The SAG Awards will take place Jan. 29 in Los Angeles, and will air live on TBS and TNT. See below for a full list of nominees.
