Sean Penn and Robin Wright Finally Divorced

As of Wednesday, Sean Penn, 49, and Robin Wright, 44, are officially divorced. Surprised to learn that they were still married? We don't blame you! The couple has been in the process of separating since 2007. Here's a brief timeline of the dramatic relationship between Princess Buttercup and Harvey Milk -- er, Robin Wright and Sean Penn.

1989 - Robin Wright and Sean Penn meet on the set of the crime thriller State of Grace. Both are recent divorcees (Sean Penn and Madonna had just ended their stormy marriage), and they begin dating.

1991 - The couple has their first of two children, daughter Dylan Frances Penn. Their son, Hopper Jack Penn (named after friends Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson) is born two years later. After each childbirth, they temporarily break up.

1996 - Sean and Robin tie the knot in a surprise ceremony.

1997 - The marriage is already on the rocks; Penn is linked to singer Jewel. He also allegedly cheats with Kate Moss during the first six years of marriage.

2004 - Sean wins the Best Actor Oscar for Mystic River and doesn't thank Robin in his acceptance speech. In an interview a few months later, Wright describes their relationship as "beautiful torture."

2007 - The couple begins divorce proceedings in December, citing irreconcilable differences. Four months later, they reconcile their differences and reunite.

2009 - After Wright accompanies him down the carpet for his second Oscar win, Sean Penn files for legal separation in April. They get back together in May. Robin Wright then files for divorce in August, saying, "I have no regrets."

2010 - In June, Penn says his ex-wife is "a ghost to me now." He is linked to model Jessica White.

On August 4, the couple reaches agreements on child support, custody and splitting their assets, and the divorce was finalized. It's been a long time coming, and hopefully it's for the best!
