It doesn't seem like Sean Penn has many good feelings left after his divorce from Robin Wright. The couple was married for 14 years, and now the actor is reflecting back on the bad parts of his romantic history.
"There is no shame in my saying that we all want to be loved by someone," he tells Esquire. "As I look back over my life in romance, I don't feel I've ever had that. I have been the only one that was unaware of the fraud in a few of these circumstances blindly."
Of course, Penn doesn't mention Wright by name, but it seems less likely that he's talking about his other ex-wife. Penn and Madonna were married from 1985 to 1989, and he and Wright stayed together from 1996 to 2010.
"When you get divorced, all the truths that come out, you sit there and go, 'What the f--k was I doing? What was I doing believing that this person was invested in this way?' Which is a fantastically strong humiliation in the best sense," he says. "It can make somebody very bitter and very hard and closed off, but I find it does the opposite to me."
Penn and Wright are parents to daughter Dylan, 21, and son Hopper, 19. Not long after the couple split, Hopper was involved in a life-threatening skateboarding accident.
"It had already been eight months of divorce and s--t, and raising a kid that's going through the divorce himself, and then this f--king thing happens," Penn says. "He's 100 percent now, no brain damage -- he's great. Got a few scars, but he's great. But it was a tough, tough time"
