In Search of the Perfect Fitting Boot - Part 1

Suede Heel BootWhen NeverSayDiet asked me to write about boots, I was faced with a dilemma. There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who can walk into a shoe store and purchase a pair of boots that will fit them like a glove and there are those of us who can’t get the boot past our calves. In a nutshell, that is the problem with boots.

When you leaf through the fashion magazines everything is tights and boots. That’s not going to help you when you are out looking for a pair that will fit….and they don’t. You may find a pair that fits but it will not be made of leather…or what they call leather isn’t what you call leather. Or if you do find leather most likely there will be a large gored panel on the side which screams, “Fat Leg, Can’t fit in a Boot!”

There are just too many variables in purchasing a boot. Do you have a wide foot as well? What size is your foot? What size is your calf? Even when they are in proportion it is still difficult to find a boot that fits properly. I have heard it all in the shop. Some find the wider calf but the ankle is swimming on them. Some find the wider width shoe but cant zipper passed the calf. Others have a smaller and narrower foot with an athletic calf. So unless you spend the money on a custom-made boot, it is almost impossible to find a proper fit…let alone a quality leather boot.

Know you size before entering the shop or ordering online. Not just your shoe size but also the circumference of your calf. One place you may check out is WideWidths.com which gives a great explanation on how to measure your calves. This will be very useful as you shop online.

One boot that seems interesting is the David Tate Daytona which is available on Zappos.com. They offer free shipping both ways. For $176.95 you get a plain utilitarian boot that will serve you well. It comes in three calf widths: Medium width (approximately 14 inches), Wide width (approximately 17 inches), Wide Wide width (approximately 19 inches). Please note that they state that “the Daytona boot is constructed of the finest, softest calfskin leather,” but I will believe it when I see it. You can see the large gored panel on the side of the boot.

The boot I am in love with is from WideWidths.com. The Maine- SEXY EXTRA WIDE Calf Boot by Ros Hommerson (Black Suede). EXTRA WIDE CALF circumference with a range of 17 1/2" (for a size 6) to 19 3/4" (for a size 12). It has a 3” heel and a 15” shaft height. What is great about this boot is that is has a more tapered shaft that most other wide calf boots and it is more fitted from the ankle through the top of the shaft. This works for me because like many women I have a shapely leg but it’s just larger. Also available in a similar boot called The Maryland - SEXY SUPER WIDE Calf Boot by Ros Hommerson (Black Suede)with SUPER WIDE CALF circumference with a range of 18" (for a size 6) to 20 1/2" (for a size 12)

I am so excited about finding this boot that I am ordering one tonight online. I will let you know how it works out.

Do you have a pair of boots for this season?
