She had a '90s alt-rock hit with "Criminal," and now Fiona Apple has the mug shot to match. The singer-songwriter, 35, was arrested in Texas on Wednesday after police found drugs on her tour bus.
Apple was on her way to a performance in Austin when her bus was stopped at a border patrol checkpoint in Sierra Blanca. With the help of drug-sniffing dogs, police reportedly found small quantities of marijuana and hashish hidden in a blue backpack. According to TMZ, the Grammy winner "freely admitted" the drugs were hers, and was then placed under arrest. Fiona spent the night in jail before being released on $10,000 bail. Her Thursday night concert in Austin was postponed until an unnamed future date.
Fiona Apple is not the first celebrity to get nabbed for marijuana possession in rural West Texas. Earlier this year, actor Armie Hammer was arrested at the same border checkpoint, as was rapper Snoop Dogg. Two years ago, Sierra Blanca police also busted country singer Willie Nelson. Why do local police arrest so many stars? That's the question that Reuters posed for county judge Becky Dean-Walker. Her answer: "because they come through here with stuff they shouldn't have."
Also, they probably underestimate those drug-sniffing dogs.
