If you haven’t heard by now, celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe’s exceptionally generous husband Rodger Berman surprised his fashionable wife with a super-blingy push present for delivering their baby boy, Skyler: a nearly 10-carat cushion cut diamond ring designed by jeweler Neil Lane. Zoe is reportedly “thrilled” with the gift (is there any other reaction to a $250,000 ring?), tweeted a picture of it and has been wearing it non-stop.
Pushing out a baby is hard work, of course, and all women deserve ridiculous props for their efforts. But we like to think of the "push" present as more of a "yay, baby's here!" commemoration -- a sweet token of admiration and love from your hubs. It recognizes that you've begun a new phase of your life as a mom, but it's not a fee paid for laboring -- cause, well, you would have done that, regardless.
But in some circles, the jury is still out. For guidance, I asked my playgroup mommies. “I got a push present. I think it was earrings or something. I can’t remember, isn’t that terrible?” said one. “I never heard of a push present, but I wish I did because I totally would have worked my husband for one,” said another. Yet another remained silent, seemingly mulling the ick factor attached to it all. As for me, I felt completely left out because I had a c-section -- no pushing involved -- until another friend informed me that it's doesn't matter whether you actually push anything out. You still qualify! If only I had known...
