'Seinfeld' Actor Hospitalized After Shooting Himself in the Head

Actor Daniel von Bargen, who played George's boss on the last season of Seinfeld, has been hospitalized after a reported suicide attempt

Actor Daniel von Bargen is in critical condition after shooting himself in the head in an apparent suicide attempt. The actor, who played George Costanza's (Jason Alexander) boss Mr. Kruger during the final seasons of Seinfeld, called 911 after he survived a self-inflicted shot to the temple on Monday morning.

"I've shot myself in the head but it didn't work... I need help," Von Bargen, 61, says in the recorded 911 call, obtained by TMZ.

When asked if the shooting was an accident, Von Bargen told the operator that he did it deliberately to avoid going to the hospital for an amputation procedure.

"They were going to amputate at least a few toes," said Von Bargen, who reportedly suffers from severe diabetes. "I've already had one leg amputated... I'm tired."

Police were dispatched to Von Bargen's apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio, while he was on the phone; at the end of the call, officers can be heard shouting at Von Bargen to keep his hands where they can see them. The actor was transported to Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati, where his condition is being described as critical but improving.

While not a big name, Von Bargen has carved out a respectable career as a character actor, with minor roles on dozens of hit TV shows (Malcolm in the Middle, The West Wing, The X-Files) and acclaimed films (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Philadelphia, The Silence of the Lambs). According to IMDb, however, he has not worked since 2009.
