Even though you've been using permanent color to dye your hair, not using the same type of dye when looking to go back to your natural hair color is important. Instead, choose a semi-permanent dye like Clairol's Natural Instincts, which contains no ammonia and only a small percentage of peroxide and has the ability to blend-in to the other colors that are already in your hair. Since semi-permanent color fades quicker, schedule a follow-up appointment about six weeks later and use color-protecting shampoos between visits. After two or three rounds of using semi-permanent hair color, your hair should blend-in to your natural color and there's no need for more touch-ups, says Rocanello. Plus, after the first visit, there's typically no need to layer color. "The second time around, is a lot faster," he says.
