Separation problems after moving
We moved to MN from Texas May 29th. My son started his new preschool on June 16. After 6 weeks, he is still having a very difficult time separating from me when I drop him off at school. He's also afraid that we will move again. Should I take him out of preschool for a while?
I think you need to wait a little longer before taking your son out of the school. He may need more than six weeks to adjust to his new environment. Meanwhile, you should assure him that you are not moving again, and that, although you drop him off at school, you ALWAYS COME BACK.
There's a terrific book about separation called ARE YOU MY MOTHER? by PD Eastman. Perhaps it would help. Also, it sometimes helps to leave your son with a piece of your clothing such as a scarf or headband or even a sweater. That way, he has you with him.
At the same time, be sure to check on the program, and make sure the teachers are warm, understanding and trying their best to help your son adjust. If you don't find this to be the case, then you do need to think about switching him. But if the program is sound, I would suggest leaving him where he is.
Best of luck,
