It’s time to face the truth: It’s been nearly two years since the final Harry Potter book was released, and after re-reading the entire epic, your household Quidditch expert needs some new options. We’ve gathered enough books to keep them busy for months, with old and new series reads to add to the rotation.
Septimus Heap by Angie Sage
The seventh son of a seventh son, Septimus Heap is endowed with stronger-than-normal magical powers, even for a wizard. The thing is, he supposedly died the night of his birth. In his place, his family is raising a young girl, Jenna, who was given to them the same day. The adventures of the Heap family are probably the closest match Harry Potter fans will find to their beloved series. Set in an alternate world—complete with detailed maps and a well-constructed history—the appeal here is the humor and the wealth of clever secondary characters. (Stanley the Confidential Long-Distance Message Rat is a delight.) Less amusing—to adults, anyway—may be the odd spellings of words like “magyk” and “darknesse” and the decision to put all magic words, spells and effects in bold text. Despite those visual distractions, these are epic yarns (500-plus pages each) to be thoroughly enjoyed.
Books in the series include: Magyk, Flyte, Physik, Queste and Syren
NEXT: Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan >>
