'Sesame Street' Premieres

On November 10, 1969, Bert, Ernie, Big Bird and other members of the Muppet gang made their debut on the premiere episode of Sesame Street. The producers centered the show’s setting around a brownstone on a city street in hopes of attracting the attention of kids living in inner-cities and urban areas. Sesame Street, the first program to unite entertainment and education for children, changed the face of kids’ television with its use of Muppets, animation and live-action shorts.
