First HIV-Positive Muppet Joins the Gang

Sesame Street has always found ways to make serious world issues accessible to its young viewers. In 2002, Takalani Sesame, the South African edition of the show, tackled a huge societal issue and introduced Kami, the first HIV-positive muppet. Because AIDS is an epidemic in Africa, creators thought Kami -- who contracted HIV from a blood transfusion -- could teach children about acceptance.
