In 2002, Takalani Sesame, the South African edition of the show, tackled a huge societal issue and introduced Kami, the first HIV-positive muppet. Because AIDS is an epidemic in Africa, creators thought Kami -- who contracted HIV from a blood transfusion -- could teach children about acceptance.
